Past Winner Spotlight: Tim Williams’ VL Turbo
Tim Williams from Victoria is now the proud owner of this clean and tough VL Turbo, safely tuned to 17psi and making a healthy 305rwkw on E85.
Under the bonnet, the reconditioned A6 block has been built to last, with an MLSR decomp 1.6mm head gasket, heavy duty valve springs, a custom ground cam, ARP head studs, and new lifter bodies for reliability and rev-happy performance.
The build features all the right mods to make it sing, including a 6boost high mount manifold, a rebuilt GT3582 turbo, and a 4 inch dump to 3.5 inch exhaust with a stainless muffler for that tough note. A 50mm Turbosmart external wastegate with a screamer pipe, a 600x300x76 bar and plate intercooler, custom no holes piping, and a custom front facing plenum round out the boost and airflow package.
Backing it all up is a rebuilt MX7 VL turbo 5 speed gearbox, a 1 piece tailshaft, and an Exedy cushion button clutch to keep it hooking up. The rear end is tough too, with a rebuilt LSD diff, an adjustable panhard rod, and a restored 85 litre drop tank.
Braking is taken care of with VY brakes featuring slotted and drilled rotors, and it sits low and mean on Pedders springs and Monroe shocks. It’s rolling on 5×4 front 15×7 rear interceptors, front runners, and 255/60 rear drag slicks for serious grip on the street.
Fueling is on point with a Bosch 044 external fuel pump, a Pierburg E85 rated intank pump, a Turbosmart fuel pressure regulator, and 950cc E85 rated injectors, all controlled by a Link ECU to keep the tune safe and strong.
